The journey taken by a very courageous and determined woman. She weighed all options offered by western medicine for treating squamous cell carcinoma in her throat area and opted for complementary and alternative treatments offered in the U.S. and overseas. At Long Last An Update...

Hello all…

Please accept my apologies for the long spell without any updates. It would be an understatement to say things have been hectic. Karen remains in the hospital for now. Her healing is progressing at a snails pace but it is progressing. The wound on her neck has the potential to bleed, so the medical staff here are being cautious about the instability associated with that and are postponing any significant physical therapy for now. She is getting some range of motion exercises and we are continuing with the alternative care protocol.
I have no estimate on how long Karen will be hospitalized. She does have a private room, which affords me the ability to stay with her as needed. The staff here is just amazing and supportive.
Karen is very frustrated and wants to go home. One thing we cannot do is go home prematurely. The risk would be her getting ill again, if confined to bed, and ending up in the other hospital where the attitude toward our alternative protocol is much less open-minded.
Karen’s hearing has been impaired while her neck is going through its changes, apparently some pressure on her Eustachian tubes. Her lungs (pneumonia) have been resolved and she is sleeping on the “Cadillac” of beds for bed sores. So, while the treatment for her neck continues her other issues are healing as well.
Karen is mixed up and confused about location and dates at times; she sometimes asks me where she is. Her pain seems to have subsided but her frustration and agitation has been heightened of late. She frequently asks me to take her home when I say I am going home for a little while.
I think I can speak for Karen when I say we both look forward to speaking about this period of our lives in the past tense and we hope that is very soon. At times I become overcome with it all and think “what a nightmare this is!” I find it so sad to see her in bed day after day. I wish I could say that on a certain date we will be getting her out of here, but I can’t. It could be soon but it may not be.
I do know she is where she needs to be and that we are blessed to have her being cared for in the facility she is currently in.
As many of you know our family has organized a benefit for Karen again this year. The event will be May 9, 2009 at Gaelic Park in the Bronx, N.Y. With the grace of God we will be able to make it there this year; that would be wonderful.

If any of you wish to purchase tickets for the raffle or have a place to hang a flier for us, then please let us know and we will get you what it is you want. Your support and help are deeply appreciated, no matter how little or how big…IT MEANS A GREAT DEAL TO US!!

As always I ask you picture Karen is healing blue light surrounding her neck and body, being held in the comforting hands of God, adorned in His graces. Karen is strong and determined and is obviously a fighter to a degree I never knew. She continues to need all your prayers and good intentions on a daily basis.

I extend to you wishes of love and blessings on your path…

Dad, your strength through this is beyond admirable. This "journey" will be one to talk about when Karen is healed and home. You know I completely agree that Karen is a fighter, to a degree I never knew either. We will have to talk to her about that :) You two are in my thoughts and prayers. Keep taking care of yourself too!
